Seitz 160-megapixel digital camera: Why the heck … so many Pixels?

The highest resolution digital camera I used is 8. The Nikon d60 I want has 10.2 megapixels. Photographer friends say that it’s not really with the pixels that will make your photos picture perfect but rather it depends on the lighting, the angle, subject, and etc. So when I read about the 160-megapixel digital camera by Seitz, my first reaction was a big “Why?!”

It may seem impressive with the high resolution but I highly doubt if photographers, pro and non-pro alike will really need this. Big advertising firms and photographers maybe, but would they allot 900 MB just for one picture? Plus it’s heavy at 4.5 lbs and too big for digital camera measuring 6 x 17 inches.

The Seitz 160 MP digital camera works well with a tablet PC. An ordinary memory card will not be enough so you may have to get a portable hard drive instead. Your 160 GB hard drive may let you take more than 150 photos with 7,500 x 21,250 pixels. Make sure though that you’re ready to carry around a heavy hard drive while taking photos of your favorite sunset.

Here are some more features of the 160-megapixel camera:

  • Create a high-resolution (160 million pixel) 6×17 digital scan in just one second
  • Capture action thanks to a minimum exposure speed of 1/2000 sec. (per pixel) – images full of speed, motion and life!
  • Benefit from an outstanding image quality in virtually all light situations:
    - 16-bit per channel (48-bit RGB) colour depth
    - anti-blooming
    - low noise
    - dynamic range of 1:2,600 (11 f-stops)
    - Seitz image optimisation algorithms
  • Use world-class large format Schneider or Rodenstock lenses – or reuse your existing set of lenses
  • Process a high-definition high dynamic range panorama directly in the RAM of the computer (single-pass, multi-pass)
  • Use a very user-friendly software with very advanced features
  • Take advantage of the latest technology in tablet PCs for image control, display and storage
  • Remove the Seitz D3 digital scan back and use it with the Roundshot D3, the Alpa family of medium format cameras
(Alpa 12 SWA, WA, TC, XY) or with other medium or large format cameras (in the future) (Source : Roundshot)

This digital camera from Seitz costs $ 45,000.
